Pre-Mortem Analysis Overview

A pre-mortem is an exercise that you can do before any goal/project to identify key risks and obstacles. This is done by imagining the goal has not been achieved with all the possible reasons why this happened, then using a matrix to assess certainty and impact.

Conducting a Pre-Mortem

  • Write a list of all the things that might stop you from achieving your goal. Think of as many reasons as possible.
  • Place each of the reasons on the grid according to how certain you are that they will happen and what impact they would have.
  • Troubleshoot ways to prevent issues in the known factors quadrant
  • Create scenarios for dealing with potential obstacles in the critical uncertainties quadrant.
  • Address the outliers and noise quadrants.
  • Start working on the solutions to ensure the goal remains on target.
